چکیده

This paper reviews the state of the art channel coding techniques for ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC). The stringent requirements of URLLC services, such as ultra-high reliability and low latency, have made it the most challenging feature of the fifth generation (5G) mobile systems. The problem is even more challenging for the services beyond the 5G promise, such as tele-surgery and factory automation, which require latencies less than 1ms and failure rate as low as 10. The very low latency requirements of URLLC do not allow traditional approaches such as retransmission to be used to increase the reliability. On the other hand, to guarantee the delay requirements, the block length needs to be small, so conventional channel codes, originally designed and optimized for moderate-to-long block-lengths, show notable deficiencies for short blocks. This paper provides an overview on channel coding techniques for short block lengths and compares them in terms of performance and complexity. Several important research directions are identified and discussed in more detail with several possible solutions.

On the Performance of Short Tail-Biting Convolutional Codes for Ultra-Reliable Communications

Motivated by the increasing interest in powerful short channel codes for low-latency ultra-reliable communications, we analyze the performance of tail-biting convolutional codes with different memories, block lengths and code rates over the additive white Gaussian noise channel. The analysis is carried out both through Monte Carlo simulations and by upper bounding the error probability via Polt...

Ultra-Reliable Short-Packet Communications: Half-Duplex or Full-Duplex Relaying?

This letter analyzes and compares the performance of full-duplex relaying (FDR) and half-duplex relaying (HDR) for ultra-reliable short-packet communications. Specifically, we derive both approximate and asymptotic closed-form expressions of the block error rate (BLER) for FDR and HDR using short packets with finite blocklength codes. We define and attain a closed-form expression of a critical ...

Non-binary protograph low-density parity-check codes for space communications

Protograph-based non-binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with ultra-sparse parity-check matrices are compared with binary LDPC and turbo codes (TCs) from space communication standards. It is shown that larger coding gains are achieved, outperforming the binary competitors by more than 0.3 dB on the additive white Gaussian noise channel (AWGN). In the short block length regime, the desi...

Delay Performance of MISO Wireless Communications

Ultra-reliable, low latency communications (URLLC) are currently attracting significant attention due to the emergence of mission-critical applications and device-centric communication. URLLC will entail a fundamental paradigm shift from throughput-oriented system design towards holistic designs for guaranteed and reliable end-to-end latency. A deep understanding of the delay performance of wir...

On the Error Performance of Coding and Equalization in Low-Complexity Ultra-Wideband Communication Systems

In this paper, the performance of various channel coding schemes is investigated in pulse-based ultra-wideband (UWB) communication systems for applications in short-range indoor environments. Pulse-based binary (BPSK) modulation and decision-feedback equalization (DFE) is considered. Concatenated adaptive equalization and coding is explored as an alternative to the more complex and often imprac...
